How To Install Caffeine 2.8.2 On Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Caffeine is an interesting app that prevents your computer from going to sleep when some programs are running. From a simple and intuitive GUI, the user creates a list of applications that forbid the computer to sleep, when the specified apps are running.

This is very good when you are watching movies or listening to music and you don’t need your computer to go to sleep.

The latest version available is Caffeine 2.8.2, which has been recently released, bringing back the Ubuntu AppIndicator and a caffeinate feature that provides the users the ability to inhibit the desktop idleness for the duration of a command: caffeinate COMMAND

how to install Caffeine 2.8.2 on Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet, Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2

In this article I will show you how to install Caffeine 2.8.2 on Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet, Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2 and other Ubuntu derivative systems.

For Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems, Caffeine 2.8.2 is available via PPA, so installing it is easy. Just do:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:caffeine-developers/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install caffeine libappindicator3-1 gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1

To install Caffeine 2.8.2 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 15.04 and derivative systems, do:

$ sudo apt-get install libappindicator3-1 gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1 gdebi
$ wget http://ppa.launchpad.net/caffeine-developers/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/c/caffeine/caffeine_2.8.2_all.deb
$ sudo gdebi caffeine_2.8.2_all.deb

To start only Caffeine (without the indicator), open the Unity Dash and type Caffeine. To Use the indicator, launch “Caffeine Indicator”.

Optional, to remove caffeine, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove caffeine
